How Birth Cards Are Calculated

The method is plain arithmetic, the version taught by The Tarot School and used by most modern readers. Write your birth date as eight digits (MMDDYYYY) and add them all up. If the total is more than 22, add its digits again. The result names a major arcana card, and reducing it once more names its partner: a total of 14 gives youTemperance (14) andThe Hierophant (5, since 1 + 4 = 5).

Two special cases. A total of 19 is the only one that yields three cards, because it reduces twice: The Sun (19), Wheel of Fortune (10), and The Magician (1). And a total of 22 counts as The Fool, paired with The Emperor (4). If your digits add straight to a single number, you share a pair with the two-digit total that reduces to it, so a sum of 4 gets the same cards as 13.

Worth saying honestly: this is numerology applied to the tarot, a modern practice rather than an ancient one, and no card can be assigned to you by arithmetic in any provable sense. What the system actually offers is a well-chosen pair of mirrors. Each pairing joins two cards that reduce to the same number and pull in different directions, and reading your own life against that tension tends to be genuinely useful, the way a good journaling prompt is.
